Happy Memorial Day! It’s an overcast day up here in Lake Tahoe (we’ve been getting some much needed rain), and I’m taking a break from my frenzy of wedding planning to remember why we don’t have to go to work today, and get to eat burgers, drink too many margaritas and get 20% off at our favorite stores instead. Even though today is about honoring those who gave their lives for our country, I’m also taking a moment to honor those currently serving, like Tony’s groomsman Rob. He sent us this picture of his office in Afghanistan; that’s our Save the Date under the flag. And my bridesmaid Julia‘s husband Rob, who has served overseas, as well. And Tony’s friends from his college years at the Virginia Military Institute, many of whom are away from their families right now so we can be safely with ours.
{Tony + General Peay at VMI, 2004. Tony was planning to enlist, but then changed his mind and decided to become an actor instead.}
My mom’s dad, Grandpa Gil, served in the Pacific during World War II, and later re-enlisted during the Korean War. And my dad’s dad, Grandaddy Joe, served in the Pacific during World War II as well. My dad’s Uncle Archie was an Army sharpshooter in World War I, and served at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. And my great grandfather, Grandpa Eggie, was a Seabee during the Normandy landing in World War II. Our family is so lucky that they all came home, but so many others aren’t so fortunate. And so today, I remember and honor those who gave their lives so we could live ours freely. I’m so grateful for their sacrifice.
{My Grandpa Gil was so proud to be buried at a National Cemetery. We miss him every day.}
