I promised myself that I would never ever ever choose a self-help book for this blog's Book Club. In general, I am judgemental of that genre (probably because my self needs lots of help) and I've always been of the opinion that I could be accomplishing so much in the time it would take to read a book about becoming more productive/happy/peaceful. Probably (definitely) deep down, I was scared to be the schmuck who needed one, and thought if I worked hard enough then I never would. That worked for a solid decade, but as you guys know from reading this blog, Hollywood has ground me down and my confidence and faith that everything won't just go to shit has slipped a bit (lot). Tony ordered this book, "Big Magic" by Elizabeth Gilbert, as a surprise to help boost me up and honestly, I started reading it just so he couldn't say "Why don't you read that book?!" the next time I cried melodramatically over my career (or lack thereof). And then I realized maybe I DO need a self-help book, because I am loving this one...View Article

I am supersupersuper excited to share May's Book Club pick, "Modern Lovers" by Emma Straub. Specifically, I am stoked because 1) Along with the rest of the world, I am OBSESSED with Ms. Straub's beautiful writing. 2) "The Vacationers" is one of my all-time favorites, and a book I always recommend when people ask me what to read next. And 3), perhaps most thrillingly of all, I was sent an advance copy of the book to read prior to its release. ADVANCE COPY. This is the fanciest I have felt since Tony and I were sent a box of free meat sprinkles in hopes that we would post a picture of our dogs eating them! I could not put this one down...View Article
This month's book club pick is a laugh-out-loud funny collection of short stories that I am truly envious I didn't write myself: "American Housewife" by Helen Ellis. For my birthday month, I really wanted to find something a) funny and b) I related to. This book is my spirit animal. I am newly(ish) a housewife, and really feeling my role as I applaud from the sidelines as my husband's new TV show takes off. I wrote recently about my third-life crisis on turning 30 (I only have 2 days left to tell people I'm "in my 20's!" Excuse me while I go cry and hyperventilate into a paper bag like the cliche I am.) And while I don't specifically relate to these ladies, especially the murderess or the kidnapper, I AM a lady who wears sunscreen even when it's cloudy, I love to lunch (and breakfast, brunch, snack and dinner), and I like to stallion walk like Beyonce when I'm alone. And I love anything this dark, clever, vicious, and above all, hysterical. It eviscerates womanhood/wifehood and lovingly embraces it at the same time, as only a smart lady can (brava, Helen Ellis. I want to know you.) I am OBSESSED...View Article
For February's Book Club pick, I'm choosing Kristin Hannah's "The Nightingale," a novel so good I dragged Tony to the holocaust museum on our 6-month wedding anniversary to see their special exhibit, "Some Were Neighbors: Collaboration & Complicity in the Holocaust," which was the backdrop for this page-turning story. Set during WWII, it's not about the soldiers or the war front, but rather what was happening to the people left behind - primarily, the women, children and men deemed to old to fight. All at once, it's a love story, a story of survival and (most interesting of all), the quieter, less-celebrated acts of heroism by women. COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN.View Article
My holiday dreams of living in sweatpants, showering minimally and reading (and boozing) non-stop came true! While Tony was off shredding the mountains of Tahoe, I was shredding the bag of books I hauled up to northern California with me while making a permanent dent on my parents' La-Z-Boy. IT WAS HEAVEN. I finally finished last month's Book Club pick, "Fates and Furies," which was epic and gorgeous and sosososo good. (If you haven't read it yet, get on it.) Here's everything else I devoured over the holidays...View Article
I'm almost finished reading Lauren Groff's "Fates and Furies" and I Cannot.Put.It.Down. I tend to jump on the bandwagon of the books everyone else seems to be talking about. This one was a finalist for the 2015 National Book Award, and I tend to fall in love with their choices. So, when I kept seeing this book pop up on lists I follow and respect, I ordered a hard copy because it just felt like the type of novel to hold in my hands, not in my iPad. The story is a portrait of Mathilde and Lotto's marriage over the course of twenty-four years; the first half is told from his perspective, and the second half is told from hers. He is a failed actor-turned-famous playwright and she is the woman behind his success. It's an epic love story that gradually reveals the complicated layers, cracks and secrets behind the "perfect" marriage the world is jealous of... The characters are never quite who you think they are, and neither is their relationship. Groff's words are like art.View Article
My insanely talented friend Jessie Rosen wrote a novel and it was released TODAY! It's called "Dead Ringer" and is a badass thriller that is a mash-up of all my favorite things in a book: A little bit of "Gone Girl," a little bit of Hitchcock, a little bit of "Pretty Little Liars." So, obviously, this is November's Book Club pick. It also happens to be a YA novel, further incentive to get into it, (because those are SO COOL right now, and also so you have something to talk to your high school-aged niece about over Thanksgiving, and make her think you're cool. ) Check out Jessie's Q&A about the book, her writing process, and for advice for writers and women in Hollywood!View Article
You guys, I am obsessed with this book. It's called "China Rich Girlfriend," it's by Kevin Kwan and I could not put it down. I just finished it and loved it so much, I bought his first book, "Crazy Rich Asians," and read 2/3 of it on the plane home from Austin yesterday. It's a satirical comedy about the 1% of the 1%, the wealthiest people in Asia. (And the author would know; he grew up among them, in Singapore). The characters are like "The Kardashians" on speed - or, more accurately, the world's most expensive and rare cocaine. The novel is a hilarious and light page-turner, and you'll feel much better about yourself for tearing through this as opposed to binging on "The Real Housewives"...View Article
